Toyota Engineer Wants Supra for the Joint Sports Car
We already know that the new "Supra" will be powered by a V6 twin-turbo V6 that will be moving the next Lexus GS and Ls. It was then picked up by YouWheel and Car Keys. Mag-X cites
Toyota insiders and even gives an engine code, 943F. This engine will make more than 400 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque.
The head engineer of the FT-1 concept Recently Tada remarked:
"I love the Supra and I love the Supra name […] It's historically important to Toyota. We're pushing for the name Supra to be used for the new car that we are developing with BMW."
We are aware that Toyota really wants to use the Supra name again, which we further confirmed after finding out that the automaker has recently filed a trademark application for the nameplate in Europe. Do you remember the FT-1 concept that Toyota released in 2014? That’s what the next Supra might look like, even though it will have some changes. (ugh that ugly back).
The BMW-Toyota partnership promises to develop both a new Toyota sports car and a successor to the BMW Z4 (believed to be named Z5). The cars will have unique drivetrains, despite the fact that they are sharing the same platform and as Tada reassures us – the joint venture has been running very smoothly and efficiently so far.
"I'd say the partnership is going well, very smooth," Tada said. "We're testing all over the world too, not just Fuji or Nrburgring, but all aroundthe world."
Unfortunately, we haven’t had the chance to see the Supra prototype being tested yet, but at least we were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the BMW newest (Z5) that has dumped the retractable hardtop to swap it with a lighter softtop. What about the drivetrain option? The assumption is that the car will be available both with a turbocharged four- and six-cylinders. And even though nothing was mentioned at the debut of the FT-1 concept in regards to the possible engine, there is a slight possibility for Toyota to go for a hybrid drivetrain.
