The Mazda RX-9 Promises to Blow Us Away with a 400bhp Rotary Weapon
Japan’s Holiday Auto magazine announced that Mazda’s board of directors has officially approved the successor to the Mazda RX-7 and Mazda RX-8 rotary coupes that we’ve all been waiting for. Mazda has already registered the trademark ‘RX-9’ to give to its new couple.
We’re expecting to see with great interest and excitement the prototype version of the vehicle, which will hopefully come out at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show to mark the 50 years anniversary of Mazda’s first rotary model and fill in the line for the Mazda rx sport.
The final product is expected to come out not earlier than January 2020.
Last October when we first laid eyes on the mazda concep 2020 RX-VISION concept, we noticed three new renderings, including a sharper body-side surfacing and a more chiselled front-end design. This will be a great attribute to the mazda rotary cars ! But the improvements don’t end with the renderings.
Rumour has it that Mazda’s will bring together turbocharging and diesel-style HCCI compression ignition in a world-first application – which will account for much as the advanced fuel-delivery and ignition technology will be applied to a rotary engine. This will make the already fast Mazda rx coupe fly !
If HCCI doesn’t happen in reality, the SKYACTIV-R engine will come with recessed spark plugs, which will help it give better fuel efficiency numbers.
The RX-9 will weight around 1300 kg and, according to Holiday Auto, produce 300kW. That sounds even more interesting than a mazda 26b to us car people. And if that’s not a sick power-to weight ratio!? The low-slung rear-drive rotary coupe, shorter than the one of the RX-VISION concept, in combination with the improved overall weight balance wrought by a rear transaxle will also offer exceptional dynamics.
Interior-wise Mazda will probably opt for a leather-lined interior that features all of its latest safety and convenience technologies. The price? Around $ 80,000 (£60,500), or in other words it will be three-times more expensive than the RX-8. Sadly that is the closest we would get to a Mazda supercar.

Engine
By employing twin 800cc rotors, the next-generation rotary engine will be given the capacity to grow to 1.6 litres. This one-of-a-kind twin-rotor turbocharged powertrain will be good enough to produce at least 400bhp – making the RX-9 the most powerful car Mazda has ever produced.Rumour has it that Mazda’s will bring together turbocharging and diesel-style HCCI compression ignition in a world-first application – which will account for much as the advanced fuel-delivery and ignition technology will be applied to a rotary engine.
